The Authority of the Bible

Updated October 28, 2001

This booklet is the best foundational study on the basics of Christian truth I've seen.  It is a 13 week workbook that is excellent for family devotions or church training.
It begins with an overview of the Bible, how to study it, the attributes of God, salvation, etc., & ends with discerning God's will and decision making.

Inerrancy & Apologetics: An Evidential-Presuppositional Method

Now for all of you who believe it is beneath you to discuss apologetic theology at the simple level Jesus did, so that even a youth can understand, here are a few personal questions using pointless fancy foreign words and transliterations that will never impress our LORD:

1.
Does your defencio fidei support a dialectic, revolutionary Weltanschauung?
2. Has social osmosis infiltrated your apologetic with our culture's Zeitgeist?
3. Are your apologies simply ad hominem arguments that merely offend?
4. If aprioristic circularity totally replaces an appeal to common facts, could it be that your apparent apologetic hypernike might actually be pyrrhic?

Huh?

1. Does your defencio fidei support a dialectic-revolutionary Weltanschauung?
- defencio fidei = defense of faith / beliefs
- dialectic = art of debate
- Weltanschauung = world view or personal philosophy
So, # 1 simply means:
“Does the defense of your beliefs really support your radical worldview?”

2. Has social osmosis infiltrated your apologetic with our culture's Zeitgeist?
- osmosis = the transfer of something from one area to another
- Zeitgeist = spirit of the age
So, #2 simply means:
“Has our culture influenced your own attitudes?”

3. Are your apologies simply ad hominem arguments that merely offend?
- apologies = methods of trying to win a debate
- ad hominem = a bad debate tactic that attacks your opponent’s character instead of his ideas
So, #3 simply means:
“Are you merely attacking your opponent’s character instead of his ideas?”

4. If aprioristic circularity totally replaces an appeal to common facts, could it be that your apparent apologetic hypernike might actually be pyrrhic?
- aprioristic = accepting something as true merely by assumption, not experience or empirical testing
- circularity = using a premise to prove a conclusion that in turn is used to prove the premise; defining one word in terms of another that is itself defined in terms of the first word
- hypernike = super victory
- pyrrhic = a victory that was too costly
So, #4 simply means:
“If you use circular reasoning in an argument, then what seems to be a great victory might eventually cost you the whole debate.”

** I mean no offense by the above questions, brothers -- just trying to make a point.
(Now we can go ahead and use simple English)

"Though by no means a stranger to controversy myself,
I do not wish to increase the height of what appears to be
a dangerously top-heavy pile of refutations and counter-refutations."
John Warwick Montgomery, Ph.D., Th.D., J.D.
(from his book, Faith Founded on Fact)

I agree with Montgomery's concern over the teetering pile of counter-refutations, but even more concerned about the manner in which they are often conducted. So here's my two cents with a simple emphasis on the character of the debate:
Throughout the history of the church, the LORD has called upon His people to "give a defense for the hope" (defencio fidei) that is in us (2 Pet 3:15). From Paul to Justin Martyr, Van Til, James Warwick Montgomery, McDowell and Geisler, the church has proclaimed the divine authority and trustworthiness of the Scripture and its gospel.
However, there is a growing conflict brewing among modern apologists that I believe is unnecessary and thus a potential source of destructive division. Remember that Lucifer's strategy is often an effort to divide and conquer. The conflict to which I refer here is between evidential apologists and presuppositional apologists. Each believes that their method of defending their hope in the Bible and the good news of Jesus is better. Some are even convinced that their method is the only valid way of apologetics.
I believe that the Scripture not only supports both methods, but in fact shows that each is inseparably interdependent upon the other. All evidential apologetics are in essence standing on presuppositional (a priori truths, such as laws of logic, etc.). Likewise, all presuppositional apologetics are using their laws of logic and reasoning evidentially.
It is a common human problem to elevate one side of an antinomy to the near or actual exclusion of the other. Once that occurs, we then are tempted in human pride to dig in and become more and more unbalanced when questioned. Remember the historical debates regarding the humanity and deity of our Lord Jesus, and the heretical extremes to which so many swung. Please let's avoid such potential division and dishonor on this issue, and work hard to iron sharpen to our Father's glory!]

Peter Breggin, M.D., & David Cohen, Ph.D., in YOUR DRUG MAY BE YOUR PROBLEM: HOW AND WHY TO STOP TAKING PSYCHIATRIC MEDICATIONS. 1999.

John Horgan, author of The End of Science and The Undiscovered Mind says about Breggin's new book:  "Courageous...compassionate...a much-needed antidote to the pro-drug bias in modern psychiatry and psychology."

Breggin, has a background that Time magazine describes as "pure establishment"--Harvard College, Case Western Reserve Medical School, and a teaching fellowship at Harvard Medical School.  Breggin has become an internationally known psychiatrist and author of a dozen books, including the best-selling Talking Back to Prozac and Talking Back to Ritalin. A member of the faculty of the Johns Hopkins University Department of Counseling, he is the International Director of the Center for the Study of Psychiatry and Psychology, which he founded in the early 70s. He lives in Bethesda, Maryland.

David Cohen, Ph.D., holds degrees from McGill University and the University of California at Berkeley. He is Professor of social work at the University of Montreal, where he teaches and does research in the field of psychiatric medication, a subject on which he has published widely.

Please note, Peter and David are not a Christians, so their "spiritual" views are generic and unbiblical. However, in August of 1998, I had the privilege to speak at a conference in Denver along with Peter Breggin and others. My personal discussions with Peter convinced me that he is one of the most sincere, committed, and knowledgeable experts in the realms of neurology, CNS biochemistry, and psychopharmacology. And the dramatic effect his recent testimony produced before the NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health) in 1999 underscores why I highly recommend his works. More technical articles by Breggin and others are available and listed in the appendices of his books.

Peter Breggin, M.D.,  TALKING BACK TO RITALIN: What Doctors Aren't Telling You About Stimulants for Children, 1998.  [Expose' of the misuse of psychopharmacology]

Margaret A. Hagen, Ph.D., psychology professor at Boston University, Whores of the Court : The Fraud of Psychiatric Testimony and the Rape of American Justice, Elizabeth Loftus, Ph.D., author of The Myth of Repressed Memory and Eyewitness Testimony, says: "This sizzling expose by a courageous psychological scientist shines a brilliant light on the incalculable harm done to millions of Americans by the purveyors of psychological pseudoscience who have invaded our courtrooms."
John Horgan, The Undiscovered MIND: How the Human Brain Defies Replication, Medication, and Explanation. (Free Press, 1999). This new book expands on the questions, critiques, and evidential examinations he began in a couple of the chapters in his acclaimed work, The End of Science. As he turned his award winning investigative skills and expertise on the field of "mind-science", he says he "didn't become any less pessimistic about the current state of mind-science. Quite the contrary (p. 10-11).

Walter A. Brown, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Brown University School of Medicine and Tufts University School of Medicine says about The Undiscovered MIND:
"John Horgan has done it again.   . . . . Horgan makes complicated lines of research accessible and compelling to the nonprofessional . . . ."

Howard Gardner, Harvard University Graduate School of Education says:
"Freud, Prozac, genes, evolution, smart machines - John Horgan offers a healthy antidote to facile claims that the enigmas of the human mind will be solved - or dissolved - by a single scientific approach."

Creation vs. Evolutionary Theory:
Please beware of the increasingly prevalent, yet unbiblical, "Christian" theories called "Progressive Creation" by Hugh Ross and called "Theistic" Evolution by Gleason Archer. (See
Dangerous errors of Hugh Ross    http://www.AnswersInGenesis.org/news/ross_gauntlet.asp ) These modern theories place the Bible under the authority of  pseudo-scientific theory.  Some of the proponents of these theories may merely be deceived by the convoluted claims of evolutionary theorists, yet others may actually be giving in to the temptation to be esteemed by the world's elite. We can't know and must not judge the heart attitudes of another person, but we are called to judge the doctrinal and moral fruit (Mat 15:19; 18:15-20; 1 Cor 5:9-13). These false claims, that God created the world through millions of years of violently selfish competition, pain, fear, suffering, and death, are blasphemous to the character of God. For a concise proof of this fact please see our article:

** NON-Christian Resources that Challenge Evolutionary Theory:

Jonathan Wells, PhD, PhD, Icons of Evolution: Science or Myth?  Why much of what we teach about evolution is wrong. (Regenery, 2000).

"Jonathan Wells demonstrates with stunning clarity that the textbook examples Darwinists themselves chose as the pillars of their theory are false or misleading.  What does this imply about their scientific standards?  Why should anyone now believe any of their other examples?"  Dr. Michael Behe, Professor of Biological Sciences, Lehigh University, and author of Darwin's Black Box.

"Jonathan Wells has done us all - the scientific community, educators, and the wider public - a great service.  In Icons of Evolution he has brilliantly exposed the exaggerated claims and deceptions that have persisted in standard textbook discussions of biological origins for many decades, in spite of contrary evidence.  These claims have been so often repeated that they seem unassailable - that is, until one reads Well's book."  Dean H. Kenyon, Professor of Biology, San Francisco State University and Co-Author of Biochemical Predestination.

"This is one of the most important books ever written about the evolution controversy.  It shows how devotion to the ideology of Darwinism has led to textbooks which are full of misinformation."  Phillip E. Johnson, Professor of Law, University of California at Berkeley, and Author of Darwin on Trial.

Lee Spetner, Ph.D., of Johns Hopkins University, "Not By Chance: Shattering the Modern Theory about Evolution."  Dr. Spetner is one of the most respected scientist in the world today, and his new book has biologists and geneticists across the country praising this book as one of the most serious challenges to the modern theory of evolution.

"I have shown in my book that the broad sweep of evolution cannot be based on random mutations. I have shown it on both theoretical and experimental grounds. On theoretical grounds, I have shown that the probability is just too small for random mutations to lead to a new species. On experimental grounds, I have shown that there are no known random mutations that have added any genetic information to the organism. I go through a list of the best examples of mutations offered by evolutionists and show that each of them loses genetic information rather than gains it. One of the examples that where information is lost is the one often trotted out by evolutionists nowadays in an attempt to convince the public of the truth of evolution. That is the evolution of bacterial resistance to antibiotics."  (This quote is from Dr. Spetner's own comments on Amazon.com about his book.)

"Dr. Spetner has an extraordinary ability to present complex mathematical, statistical, and biological issues in a comprehensible manner."--Rabbi Joseph Elias, The Jewish Observer

"It is certainly the most rational attack on evolution that I have ever read"--Professor E. Simon, Department of Biology, Purdue University

Prophecy\Eschatology: End Times (Eschatology) - Premillennial, pretribulational
Remember, that God, Himself, claimed He would use prophecy to prove His authorship of His Word  (Gen. 3:16; Isaiah 41:22-23; 44:6-8, etc..)  No other religious material on earth claims 100% accuracy in hundreds of predictions of the future to prove that its author is the God who transcends time and space.

Isaiah 44:6-7 " Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel, ... 'I am the First and I am the Last; ... And who can proclaim as I do? ... ... the things that are coming and shall come."

While every student of the Bible should try to approach it exegetically rather than eisegetically, no student of the Bible is totally unbiased.  We all come to Scripture with some measure of preconceived notions.  So that you'll know where I'm coming from up front, I believe that the Scripture teaches a premillennial eschatology.  If you want to examine the alternative views, which I am convinced by the evidence are incorrect (i.e., amill, and postmill), you might want to read Kenneth Gentry's, "He Shall Have Dominion", R.C. Sproul's The Last Days According To Jesus", Anthony Hoekema's The Bible & the Future". After comparing the writings of the best scholars from all camps, I believe you will see that the premillennial position most consistently interprets the Bible "normally", and is therefore able to harmonize all of the jigsaw puzzle pieces (Bible verses) together into a coherent picture of God's culmination of His-story. The other views are sincere and should be respected, but they must "spiritualize" and allegorize huge portions of Scripture in order to fit them into their preconceived theologies.  Instead, we should simply take God at His Word, normally as it is stated, in the context of the entire Bible.  Certainly on occasion, the Scripture uses symbol or allegory, but the majority of prophecies - both those that have already been fulfilled as well as those yet to be realized - are given to us as literal, historical, people, times, places, and events.  For example, in Daniel 9, the first 69 of the 70 weeks of years were already fulfilled in an amazingly literal manner regarding Jesus' first coming, and this fact is accepted by scholars from each eschatological camp.  Given this fact, the only normal interpretation for the 70th week is that it also will be fulfilled in a literal manner.

** Remember, even huge jigsaw puzzles are not really complicated, but simply require patience, diligence, and time to put them together. And when you finally put this one together, it's awesome and will draw you to your knees in humble worship - singing Thou art worthy!

By "jigsaw puzzle" I do not condone the common error of merely gathering proof texts out of context and cramming them into a preconceived framework.  To do it properly, each piece, whether it be a word, sentence, or paragraph must be prayerfully and carefully studied in its full context.

Paul Benware, Th.D.   Understanding End Times Prophecy. [Benware is Prof.. of Bible and theology at Moody Bible Institute. This book is an excellent introduction to the various interpretations of biblical prophecy. Most conservative theologians agree on the literal, historical-grammatical method of interpretation, while also recognizing the occasional use of figures of speech, metaphors, hyperbole, etc. In this book, Dr. Benware very effectively demonstrates the fact that literal, national-ethnic Israel will play a central role in the culmination of God's revelation of His Glory. He compares both covenant theology and dispensational theology, with Scripture, so that you may draw your own conclusion.

Dave Hunt , A Woman Rides The Beast.  [This carefully documented work, demonstrates the voluminous evidence for the deceptive role the Vatican has played, and will play in the great tribulation. While many Catholics are truly regenerated Christians (despite the central errors of Vatican I and II), the official position of the Roman Church is anti-Israel and ripe for the manipulation of the anti-Christ. You may also be interested in a book by Dr. Malachi Martin, ex-professor at the Vatican's Pontifical Institute. The book is called "The Keys of This Blood".  Dr. Martin is a practicing Catholic and friend of Pope John Paul II, yet his book supports much of Dave Hunt's warnings. The Vatican refuses to fully acknowledge Jerusalem as Israel's capital, and the Pope is pushing for Jerusalem to become an international city under the authoritative "oversight" of the Vatican. Keep watching the news folks, as the Vatican and Israel diplomatically wrestle for control of the "city of peace". The camel's nose is in the tent!]

Sproul is a recognized authority.  And from the futurist perspective, John MacArthur Jr., Paul Benware, Renald Showers, etc., are all highly respected, biblical scholars]
