Examination of a wound on Rory's back revealed he had been shot
in the spine by a hunter but not killed.  He was paralyzed
from the waist down and found  crawling across a country yard.

He was an amazing example of the nephesh (soul) capacity
of some animals, being capable of great depths of emotion,
thoughtful reason - even gratitude.  At first, Rory was suffering,
afraid, and aggressive.

However, within less than an hour of slow, gentle care, he
realized that I was there to help.  He chose to stop all show of
aggression and actually reached out for me.  He not only reached
for me to feed him by bottle and by licking food off of my
fingers, but he even held my hand to his chest in order to sleep.

When in pain and afraid, he would reach out for my hand, pull it
in toward his chest and hold tight until he fell asleep.  Since it
became clear after a couple of days that his paralysis was
permanent, he had to be euthanized.  My grief and tears were
comforted by the assurance that we will see one another again
in the Good Shepherd's restoration of His creation.

Proverbs 12:10
"A righteous person cares about the soul of his animals,
but the compassion of wicked people is nothing but cruelty."

This series of pages is being remodeled to include various photos and video clips of our 25 exhibits (aquariums / terrariums) and the 40+ animals that live with us in class.  Please be patient as it takes a lot of time and work to format and upload the files.  * Many of our animals were acquired because they were sick, injured, abandoned and in need of care and a refuge.  Those that are native to our area  and sufficiently rehabilitated are released, but many have to stay for their safety.

How to set up and manage a classroom "Mini-Zoo".
Why zoonotic diseases are not a problem in a well-managed menagerie.

Brief background to our NCZoo:

Most Biology classes merely talk "about" life, and the students only see and handle pictures, videos, and dead bodies of once living creatures.  Yet, the most wonderful thing about God's creation is the "nephesh chayah" (Hebrew for "living soul") manifested in both animals and humans as they think, feel, and interact in relationships.  For this reason (and the fact that I will always be a zookeeper at heart), I decided to invest the time, effort, and money to maintain a mini-menagerie of God's amazing animals.  Even the simplest of God's awesome creatures is more complex than the best super computer men can design.

Many of you are probably unfamiliar with the term "nephesh" and the biblical distinctions between plants, animals, and humans.  Secular biology courses fail to fully delineate the unique and qualitative differences between these three groups.  According to the Bible, God's Word, plants are organic machines that do not have "nephesh" life.  They were originally designed to serve as food for nephesh creatures (animals and man), because God did not create violence and death.  Scripture used the term nephesh (soul) for animals because they can think and feel, but they cannot think about God.  People are also described as nephesh, but  in contrast to animals, humans not only can think and feel, but can do so about God.  Humans are therefore responsible for their decision to either submit in faith to His authority as Creator (Romans 1) or to rebel and go their own way.

After Adam's choice of sin infected God's creation with selfish, violent competition, and survival of the cruelest / coolest, only then did animals and people began to kill one another.  After the catastrophic changes in Noah's time resulting from the global flood and tectonic/volcanic upheaval, many plant "kinds" were destroyed.  When Noah's family and their menagerie began to replenish the earth, it was very difficult to find plants to provide sufficient complete proteins (essential amino acids).  This may have been why God for the first time gave permission for people (Genesis 9:3) to kill and eat the flesh of nephesh animals.  Even then, however, God commanded that it be done humanely and with reverent remembrance that the "life (nephesh) is in the blood" and that carnivorous diets are the result of a broken world, not God's way of love.  Scripture even promises that when God finally lets go of this old, infected universe so that it burns up in a massive thermonuclear meltdown (2 Peter 3), He will recreate a new heaven and new earth were His love and peace will once again rule the behavior of all nephesh creatures.

So, our NCZoo is a mini-Ark of living creatures, designed by our Creator for us to learn how awesome He is and how to care for them with His love.  "Soulcare" for all of God's NEPHESH creatures.
