Current Year 2006-2007

The Life Science of Creation
"Basic" Bio-Logic
Studying God's World (Science)
in Light of His Word (
Scripture)

The Way of Creation:
Sacrificing self for the needs of others. (Ex. = Christ's Cross)

The Way of Evolution:
Sacrificing others for the desires of self. (Ex. = Abortion)

The beginning curriculum OUTLINES for Life Science, Biology, and Honors Biology are nearly identical as we must cover foundational concepts of Logikos, Scientific Method, Origins, and Classification/Baraminology.

Dramatically different content breadth and depth are the distinction between the three courses. As we progress in the year, the general outlines will still be similar to one another, even similar to first year College Biology, but the scope of varied subjects covered will differ along with breadth and depth of content.

Personal Philosophy of Education (46 pages - long download, Word Doc)

   * HOMEWORK: As soon as you are given notes, study guides, handouts of any kind, you are responsible to set a personal study schedule and begin studying them ASAP.  I recommend you use my instructions/article on "How and Why to Create a Condensed Memory OUTLINE".  Please remember, you're not elementary students anymore, so we won't be spoon-feeding, or given constant teacher-generated busy work to do at home.  Some courses, like Math and Chemistry, require a lot of "practice" problems homework.  In contrast, a large part of Biology/Life Science requires the memorization of many terms/concepts along with learning to think Bio - logically (Greek = logikos).

I will carefully teach through ALL of the material using PowerPoint Presentations, Areopagus Class Dialogue (see Acts 17), "Living LABS", etc. Your job is to highlight terms, concepts, and processes that I tell you are important, especially those that will be re-tested throughout the year.  Much of this course requires comprehensive knowledge and cumulative testing.  So, beware.  Do NOT just cram before assessments.  Crammed material does not go into long-term memory and therefore cumulative material will catch up with you as the year unfolds!

You are expected to schedule your time throughout each unit:

- to read and understand the concepts taught
- to outline and condense your notes into manageable segments with memory cues
- to memorize your outlines well
- to meditate on and question the meaning and implications of everything covered
  * Never believe anything without sufficient evidence (critical thinking / bio-logic) Proverbs 14:15; Hebrews 11:1

Why have 1,000's of PhD scientists rejected macroevolution?
  - They include
the inventor of the MRI & professors at major universities.
  - Yet, PBS, National Geographic, & Scientific American claim there are none.
  - If new evidence has convinced 1,000's, then shouldn't you find out why?
  - Take a look for yourself. (Here are a few lists: AiG, ICR, CMI, CRS)

What kind of "god" is portrayed by theistic evolution?
   - Remember, survival of the fittest depends upon pain, fear, suffering, & death.
   - In contrast, the God of the Bible is the Good Shepherd.
   - Theistic evolution is a belief that blasphemes God by making Him a monster.

Why is the character of our Creator the cornerstone of counseling?
   -
The foundation for consistent peace, joy, & unselfish love must be trust in God.
   - Believing that God desired & designed disease & death does not lead to trust.
   - Good News: Willful sin, Satan, & selfishness are the cause, not God.

Dr. A.E. Wilder-Smith (Christian / Young Earth Creationist) is one of very few scientists who earned three doctorates in physical sciences from prestigious universities - Oxford, then Geneva, and finally Zurich.  The website memorializing his work and life, http://www.wildersmith.org/, contains a wealth of material, including videos, audios, articles, and books, for the scientific scholar as well as the layman.

NCZoo "Living Labs" - (30 Aquariums/Terrariums) (Over 40 Live Animals)
Remember, "Biology" means the study of "Life", not dead specimens!
This especially means the study of "nephesh" inter-relationships.

    - Where to get a QX3 and why you'll love it
    - What you can do with it and how to use it

Class Management / Discipline Policies
Life Science Syllabus

Study Motive:  God's kind of love, which sacrifices the desires of self for the needs of others, instead of sacrificing the needs of others for the desires of self.

Don't believe anything, even what I say, unless the evidence makes it worthy of your trust.
"Faith is the . . . evidence of things not seen." (Heb 11:1)

Text and Class Notes:
Remember, my PowerPoints and some WORD Documents are very large and take a lot of space.
I cannot afford to pay for the host storage space to keep all of them online at the same time.
So, I might only be able to maintain the most recent and immediately needed files.
Also, remember that they take a long time to download, depending on your connection speed, so be patient.
If you have trouble, email me - sid@soulcare.org or sgalloway@northlakechristian.org

  * Units will be uploaded and links activated a week or two before we begin them.

 Answers in Genesis (www.answersingenesis.org)
 Institute for Creation Research (www.icr.org)
 Creation Research Society (www.crs.org)

ORIGINS DEBATES & PRESENTATIONS -
Which Model Best Fits the Evidence?
(Biblical Creation or One of the many Non-Biblical Models?)
Pray for the possibility for debates / dialogues here on the NCS campus or in a local church:
One potential is to have Mr. Galloway debate an evolutionary teacher or professor.
Another possibility is to have another creationist debate an evolutionist.

Also, it would be wonderful to bring down a team from Answers In Genesis.
Their scientists / speakers are excellent, using PowerPoint / video visual aids.
The evidences they present are glorifying to the Lord and evangelistically effective.

Memory Cards due Tuesday Nov 14

Just as with the last unit, there is a large quantity of material that must be memorized before you can comprehend concepts and apply principles. Therefore, remember that you have - as always - homework every night if you need it. The specific, required homework due Tuesday is to make an effective set of condensed memory cards. It is better if you write them by hand, since this forces your brain to store the information better.

Also remember that whatever is not written on your note cards should be stored in your memory. If you give me a short outline with only a few main headings, I will individually and personally test to see how much of the content you have actually put to memory.

November 27 - December 1
Unit 6 - Chapter 3 Genetics: From Monk Mendel to DNA
1st Assignment: Memory Outline Card on Notes due Tuesday

LAB: Word Doc Lab - Elodea (Anacharis) Cells [Osmosis, Homeostasis, Photosynthesis]
(Due to lack of time, this lab will be done in class with the QX3 Digital Scope as a whole class)

Spiritual Analogy & Application:  Elodea’s common name is “Anacharis” meaning “increased GRACE / GIFT (charis)” in Greek.  Just as our Creator God gave plants to continually provide life-giving air (oxygen) to His nephesh (thinking / feeling) creatures, God has also given us the Holy Spirit as the source of new, eternal life through the second birth spiritually when a person is “born-again”.  By the way, the New Testament Greek word for spirit is pneuma, which means air or wind.  Therefore, without the new, spiritual, second birth, no person can have eternal life.  Jesus said the choice is yours (John 3).  The Good News (Gospel) is that Jesus did all the work necessary for us, through His sinless life, sacrificial death, and resurrection.  None of our tainted “good” works are of any value to earn or buy eternal life.  [THE GOOD NEWS]

Unit 11 - Chapter 8-9 Introduction to PLANTS:

Remember, you have homework EVERY night IF you decide that you NEED it. You are young adults and are responsible to manage your own study time efficiently and effectively. Don't depend on your teachers or your parents to "spoon feed" and push you along, or you will not be prepared for later grades or college. Examine the notes and assignments for this unit and then break it up into manageable sections to study as the days unfold. Remember to review the sections you have already studied to solidify long term memory and keep it fresh in your mind. If you have any questions, ask in class or email me.
Mr. Galloway

You need to be more independent in your study for this unit, to go straight into the QUIZ.

Thanatology is the "study of death".
This lab provides graphic evidence of the significance of life (bios) & soul (nephesh).
Life Science will be using prepared rats this year.

WHY HAVE WE STUDIED ABOUT "LIFE"?
John Merrick, not an "Elephant Man", but one of the finest examples of Christ-like character, who bore unimaginable torment, physically and emotionally in this sinful world of survival of the cruelest.

A few sample quotations, illustrating the full spectrum of evidence so often censored from the average biology student:

Dr Werner Gitt, In the Beginning Was Information, CLV, Bielefeld, Germany, p. 107, 1997.
"…there is no known law of nature, no known process and no known sequence of events which can cause information to originate by itself in matter."

Dr Lee Spetner (Professor of Biophysics at Johns Hopkins University) and author of, Not By Chance, The Judaica Press, Inc., Brooklyn, New York, p.138, 1997.
"
All point mutations that have been studied on the molecular level turn out to reduce the genetic information and not to increase it."

p.159-160  "Not even one mutation has been observed that adds a little information to the genome. That surely shows that there are not the millions upon millions of potential mutations the theory demands. There may well not be any. The failure to observe even one mutation that adds information is more than just a failure to find support for the theory. It is evidence against the theory. We have here a serious challenge to neo-Darwinian theory."
