Study Motive:  God's kind of love, which sacrifices the desires of self for the needs of others,
instead of sacrificing the needs of others for the desires of self.

Don't believe anything, even what I say, unless the evidence makes it worthy of your trust.
"Faith is the . . . evidence of things not seen." (Heb 11:1)

Please note the website problem below:

Somehow on 5/8/08 this "Biology" page was damaged, or altered by a hacker.  All of the year's units, dates, and links (summarized in the table below) were deleted from October '07 to the end of this year '08.  The good news is that all of the actual lesson note and power point files are OK.

  Unit 3 - CLASSIFICATION
  Unit 4 - Chem & Biochem
  Unit 5 - Cytology
  Unit 6 - Homeostasis
  Unit 7 - Transport
  Unit 8 - Photosynthesis
  Unit 9 - Respiration
  Unit 10 - Mitosis/Meiosis
  Unit 11 - Genetics
  Unit 12 - Botany
  Unit 13 - Animalia
  Unit 14 - Ethology
  Unit - 15 Anatomy
  Unit - 16  Ecology
  Unit - 17 Creator's
Character through the
life of John Merrick
(NOT the elephant man)

BELOW is a reconstruction of the end of the year up to the final.
You can also use links on the 06-07 page for the unit documents you need to study for the final.  We will review May 20-23.

EXTRA CREDIT POTENTIAL
 - Due Wednesday May 21

- Go and see the new documentary movie, "EXPELLED",
at the Slidell Grand 16 Theater
(You must save your receipt/ticket and staple it to your review)
- Write a 2 page REVIEW that includes
     * Overview synopsis of the film's content and central message
     * Strongest parts of the film that support the producers' message
     * Weakest elements in the film that support the producers' message
     * Conclusion explaining your view of the film

DATES = April 30 to May 9
Unit 12 Ethology and Nephesh Behavior

God's Goal for His Bio-Logical creation (Learning to Love His Way)
  - Cooperation not Competition and survival of the most selfish

   * Sacrificing self for the true needs of others
    * NOT sacrificing others for the desires of self

( WORD DOC notes)  Ethology and Animal (Nephesh) Behavior

Please remember that our emphasis in this Ethology and Animal Behavior Unit is on the pinnacle purpose of God's creation: "nephesh" creatures who are able to experience and enjoy His nature of love and order with one another (animals, humans, and angels) and with Him directly (humans and angels).

Humane Virtual - Digital Dissection Alternatives:

(Based on some of the best and most current research regarding methods for learning 3-D anatomical form and function, as well as recent research on animal sentience and the cruel methods used to raise and kill nephesh creatures for actual dissection.)

N. L. Harrison, M.D. Scripps Memorial Hospital Chula Vista Department of Pathology
A Physician's Testimony:  "As a pathologist, I perform careful dissections every day—on human tissues, not on animals. It’s my job to know the relationship between anatomy and physiology, between health and disease.  But it wasn’t the frog or cat dissections we performed in public school that inspired me to study science. It was my excellent science teachers! The energy they poured into our classrooms, the academic heights they challenged us to reach, and their own bright intellects drew me into this field.  Decades later, I’ve come to regret those dissections and have since studied computerized alternatives that are extremely comprehensive. As a doctor who performs autopsies, I can assure students that computer images of well-preserved tissues look more like the "real thing" than the squishy gray organs of a formalin-fixed specimen."

Virtual Frog 2.5 "Research study proves that virtual frog dissection is a more effective learning tool than traditional dissection."
     (
From the VF site)

A 2001 study at George Mason University compared virtual frog dissection (using The Digital Frog 2) and concluded that "multimedia-based virtual dissection was more effective than hands-on dissection in helping students learn about frog anatomy. Moreover this result was achieved when the time available for the virtual dissection was approximately 44% less than that available for hands-on dissection".  Download a PDF of the study's abstract. "Research consistently shows that cruelty-free alternatives teach concepts of anatomy and biology just as well or better than traditional dissection. They also teach students to value and respect all life forms, and can save schools money in the long run. Find out more"

DOMINION: The Power of Man, the Suffering of Animals, and the Call to Mercy, by Matthew Scully.  2002.

Review From Library Journal of DOMINION:
"This is one of the best books ever written on the subject of animal welfare. Scully, a [conservative] journalist and former speechwriter for President George W. Bush, chooses to fight on his own ground, and he rightly argues that the important thing is not insisting upon equal "rights" for animals but in treating them with a modicum of respect and dignity."

CREATOR'S CHARACTER

WHY HAVE WE STUDIED ABOUT "LIFE"?
John Merrick, not an "Elephant Man", but one of the finest examples of Christ-like character,
who bore unimaginable torment, physically and emotionally in this sinful world of survival of the cruelest.
