AP BIO has
EVOLVED
 into

Biology II

(click here to see the former AP Bio Curriculum)

For those students transitioning over from the Anatomy Class, don't worry.
I will help each of you integrate into our scheduled content so that you won't get burned.

Textbook / Resources:  We will review materials covered in BIO I, adding breadth and depth from numerous recent resources, especially the textbook, BIOLOGY by Campbell and Reece.

Homecoming week has been designated by the staff as a "no-homework" week, so it will be a perfect time for transition and transformation from AP Bio to BIOLOGY II.

Homework: Every night AS YOU NEED IT!  You are now young adults on your way to college, who must learn to manage your own time according to your abilities and school schedule.  The majority of biology is memorization, so some of you will need to spend a lot of time many days ahead of quizzes and tests to store the material into long term memory.  Others will not need to spend nearly as much time.  It would not be constructive for me to force all of you to do assigned busy work at home as if you were elementary students.

Personal Philosophy of Education
(About 50 pages - long download, Word Doc)

Class Management / Discipline Policies

Study Motive:  God's kind of love, which sacrifices the desires of self for the needs of others,
instead of sacrificing the needs of others for the desires of self.

Don't believe anything, even what I say, unless the evidence makes it worthy of your trust.
"Faith is the . . . evidence of things not seen." (Heb 11:1)

Term 1:

Why the change?
Click here for my initial Parent/Student Letter announcing the transition of AP to BIO II.
Biology, more than all other science fields, changes and grows every year.  Therefore, I am convinced that we need a refresher course to help the majority of students more than an AP course to help a small select few.

Students in BIO II have already taken (in 10th grade) either On-Level Biology or Honors Biology.  A small percentage of those students might benefit from an intensive and extensive AP BIO course.  However, the vast majority by the time they get to college three years later have forgotten a significant portion of what they learned of the broad scope of biological science.  So, my personal passion is to provide for the majority first.  This new course will be designed to help them:

1.  Review (refresh) their memories about the core biological terms and concepts needed to not only successfully complete their upcoming college biology course, but to excel in it.

2. Preview new and difficult science concepts that their college professor will introduce, as well as important bioethical issues that some professors will use to attack Christianity.  In fact, I regularly receive letters from former students not only expressing gratitude for biblical worldview perspectives they learned in 10th grade biology, but also asking for help as they struggle with professors and college peers who challenge their beliefs and morals.

The following is a brief, summary chart to provide a quick overview of BIO II’s content and emphases:

Homework:
Just as in college, you are responsible to schedule your time at home to work through the textbook according to the chart of chapters per term above.  You must set aside time to read, outline, condense your outlines, and memorize the core content.  Below are outlines for the chapters in both WORD and POWERPOINT to help you, but don't depend on merely reading these.  You must organize, memorize, comprehend, and be able to apply the terms, concepts, and principles.  I recommend you use my instructions/article on
"
How and Why to Create a Condensed Memory OUTLINE".

The following in this gray box is what the original AP BIO class tried to cover in the first five weeks of the year.  The newly evolved BIO II course will pick up mid-way into the subject area of CYTOLOGY and continue on with a less intense pace.  The BIO II students will not be held responsible for knowing this previous, extensive content.

FINAL EXAM - COMPREHENSIVE / CUMULATIVE

  * HOMEWORK EXPECTATIONS: You are expected to schedule your time throughout each unit.  I recommend you use my instructions/article on "How and Why to Create a Condensed Memory OUTLINE".  Please remember, you're not elementary students anymore, so we won't be spoon-feeding, or given constant teacher-generated busy work to do at home.  Some courses, like Math and Chemistry, require a lot of "practice" problems homework.  In contrast, a large part of Biology/Life Science requires the memorization of many terms/concepts along with learning to think Bio - logically (Greek = logikos).

- to read and understand the textbook and lab sections BEFORE each class
- to outline and condense your notes into manageable segments with memory cues
- to memorize your outlines well
- to meditate on and question the meaning and implications of everything covered
  * Never believe anything without sufficient evidence (critical thinking / bio-logic) Proverbs 14:15; Hebrews 11:1

Bio-logikos Classroom Zoo / Rehab (brochure / Word doc)

NCZoo "Living Labs" - (30 Aquariums/Terrariums) (Over 40 Live Animals)
Remember, "Biology" [Greek = bio + logos] means the study of "Life", not dead specimens!
This also means the study of "nephesh" inter-relationships, especially humans in God's image.

Digital Microscopy QX3:
    - Where to get a QX3 and why you'll love it
    - What you can do with it and how to use it
    - Photos and video clips of our class digital labs

(This QUIZ will be on Logikos Thinking, Evidential Belief, & Respectful Refutation)

Bio II Origins Quiz Study Guide

This quiz will consist of a few “brief” essay questions.
I won’t be looking for picky details, but merely to see that you have a solid grasp of the core concepts associated with each questions.
The following are the questions:

1. Logikos Thinking and Evidential Belief:
Explain why thinking logically and believing based on objective evidence is the way of both science and scripture.

2. Respectful Refutation:
Describe a possible future example demonstrating how you would apply the principles of humbly, gently, and respectfully refuting an evolutionist. Remember that it’s best to use questions instead of “telling”. So, make up questions you would use to challenge the person’s beliefs, help them think logically, and re-examine their own evidence.

3. List and briefly explain the following outline:

I. Significance (Origins is important because it is the cornerstone of beliefs and beliefs produce behaviors.)
A. God
B. Graphae
C. Gospel
D. Glorify

II. Evidence (We should base all belief on sufficient objective evidence to make it worthy of our trust and actions.)
A. Scholars
B. Science
C. Scripture

Test: Thursday Feb 14
Study Guide for the TEST  (Word Doc)
This TEST will be on the quiz material plus a summary of the Significance/Evidence outline.

      *  Most of you did well on the essay quiz. However, some of you only did a minimal job of explaining the outline.
       * For the significance of origins / evidence for creation section of the test, you will need to provide a much more detailed
explanation of both significance and evidence.  On Tuesday, we will discuss more about what you're expected to write
for you test essay question on the outline.

Unit 6 - Botany: The study of plants
Approximately Feb 15 - Feb 26

Non-nephesh organic machines designed by God for:

Unit 7 - Ethology (Animal Behavior)
Approximately Feb 27 to March 13

A "Liger" = Hybrid of a male lion and female tiger.
Ligers are exceptionally large (800-900 lbs),
yet they are amazingly gentle giants.
- Their hybridization demonstrates the reality of a designed feline "kind",
just as Scripture describes (Gen 1).
- Their gentle character reflects the original Edenic nature and the promise of the new Earth where the lion will eat grass and live in peaceful harmony with lambs and people (Isaiah 11, 65; Romans 8).

  - The FINAL Collated PPT slides from numerous sources:

Sorry students for the delay in this final huge version of the PPT for your study.

Disclaimer:

Assumptions can be dangerous, especially in science.  They usually start as the most plausible or comfortable interpretation of the available facts.  But when their truth cannot be immediately tested and their flaws are not obvious, assumptions often graduate to articles of faith, and new observations are forced to fit them.  Eventually, if the volume of troublesome information becomes unsustainable, the orthodoxy must collapse.” [Emphasis added in bold italics]

Crucial Cornerstone Questions RE: Creation

Why have 1,000's of PhD scientists rejected macroevolution?
  - They include
the inventor of the MRI & professors at major universities.
  - Yet, PBS, National Geographic, & Scientific American claim there are none.
  - If new evidence has convinced 1,000's, then shouldn't you find out why?
  - Take a look for yourself. (Here are a few lists: AiG, ICR, CMI, CRS)

What kind of "god" is portrayed by theistic evolution?
   - Remember, survival of the fittest depends upon pain, fear, suffering, & death.
   - In contrast, the God of the Bible is the Good Shepherd.
   - Theistic evolution is a belief that blasphemes God by making Him a monster.

Why is the character of our Creator the cornerstone of counseling?
   -
The foundation for consistent peace, joy, & unselfish love must be trust in God.
   - Believing that God desired & designed disease & death does not lead to trust.
   - Good News: Willful sin, Satan, & selfishness are the cause, not God.

Dr. A.E. Wilder-Smith (Christian / Young Earth Creationist) is one of very few scientists who earned three doctorates in physical sciences from prestigious universities - Oxford, then Geneva, and finally Zurich.  The website memorializing his work and life, http://www.wildersmith.org/, contains a wealth of material, including videos, audios, articles, and books, for the scientific scholar as well as the layman.

Watch what happens when the famous evolutionist, Dr. Dawkins, is asked to provide one single example of a genetic mutation or evolutionary process that increases the information in the genome. (To view this you must have on your PC Macromedia Flash Player.)

Creation Quote of Interest:
Dr Emmett Williams,
Creation Research Society Quarterly,
29(2):84, September 1992.

‘Anyone who questions man’s reasoning, particularly on the origin of the physical world, faces an arrogance almost beyond comprehension. Many scientists realize the weak underpinnings of scientific models but the spokesmen of naturalism and their media advocates will not abide anything that questions either the supremacy of man, his reasoning power or his conclusions. I have seen media interviewers, who gladly try to tear Christian and conservative guests to pieces, grovel before a scientist who is [one of the] illuminati of evolutionary thought. No one would dare to try to question a living example of the superiority of man’s reasoning power. They are in the presence of a high priest of the one and only knowledge — let all the earth keep silent before him!’
