Genesis 1:1-5
Tape # 5 - Nov 21, 1999

Purpose of Genesis = Not to satisfy curiosity, but to stimulate worship of Almighty God.

Atheistic evolution is a mathematical absurdity,
which claims that in the beginning:
Nobody + Nothing = Everything.

Review: (Gen 1:1-3) 2 Tim 1:8-9
v.1 -
God. Bara, Space-Time-Matter continuum (cold, sterile without energy or life, nephesh)
v.2 -
The Holy Spirit, rachaph, vibrating the universe to energize it into action.
Geocentric perspective as center stage of all history (His Story).
And the spotlight is on Jerusalem (800 x's), God's city of peace (Eze 5:5).
v.3 -
The Word calls forth "light", John 1:1-5; 1 John 1:1-5.

"For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us." 2 Cor 4:6-7 (NKJV)

Today's Focus: (Gen 1:4-5, and a summary of Day One)

** Angels
might have been created in this first day.
               (Job 38:4-7; Isa 14; Eze 28; Heb 1:14; Psa 104:2-5)
v.4 - "And God saw that the light was good"

Good = manifestation of His glory (John 1:1-18) = necessary energy & warmth for life.
The light source, apparently diffuse, shone all around the earth at this initial stage.
This would be a source light the inside of a flourescent bulb where all of the gas emits electromagnetic radiation.

"And God separated the light from the darkness"

Separated - relative to the earth, which now had a light and dark side.
God apparently localized the source of light at this point in time so that it was located on one side of the earth. Job 38:19f

v.5 - "And God called the light day, and the darkness He called night"

Day = "yom" = visible presence of light, and a 24 hr unit.
Exo 20:9-11; 31:12-17; Psa 8; 104.
It never means an aeon or "period" of days, as evolutionary, geologic epocs.
It can refer to the character of a "time", such as Gen 2:4; Isa 11:6-10; "the day of the Lord"; the time of the Judges", etc..
As the World Turns - rotation of the earth on its axis produces alternating, ordered intervals of light and dark.

"Then came evening, then came morning"

PM came = 12 hrs of light have past in which God worked.
AM came = 12 hrs of dark have past in which God did not work.
There is no "the" (definite article) before evening or morning in this verse or any other in chapter one until v. 31, when God's work was completely finished and He rested.

"Day One"

Genesis shows that the current Jewish day, which is calculated from evening to evening, is not God's original method of calculating days. Here in Genesis, a day runs from morning to morning.
The appearance of the light is the start of the day in God's eyes, just as the rising of Jesus on the first morning of the week was the start of the new creation (the first born from the dead).

Why are these verses so important?
Because the world seems to be entering a new "Dark Age".

They are the cornerstones of the entire Bible, all of theology, and every practical dimension of your life and relationships. Only God is good and only God is pure light. He was the source of the first creation that now has fallen into corruption, and He is the only hope for anyone to enter into His new creation, through Jesus Christ His Son: John 3:16-36

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. “And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. “For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. “But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”
. . . [John the Baptist said] “He must increase, but I must decrease. “He who comes from above is above all; he who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all. “And what He has seen and heard, that He testifies; and no one receives His testimony. “He who has received His testimony has certified that God is true. “For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure. “The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand. “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

Is your heart desire like that of John the Baptist? John 3:30
Are you in the light?
Are you walking in the light?
